Tom Surgey joined us at the Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre 2019.
Tom Surgey is a young, confident, and energetic wine expert and presenter. Tom, who is in his late 20's, is a natural communicator with a sense of humour and plenty of charisma.
Tom started his career in hospitality at fourteen when he hopped off the school bus and asked his local Sussex pub if they had any jobs. He was put to work peeling carrots and potatoes after school and at weekends. It was the start of a career in hospitality that Tom has not deviated from since. During his school and college years, he worked behind bars in the evenings and developed a passion and strong knowledge of beers and spirits. Since his mid-teens when Tom first started working in pubs, he has been fascinated by 'pub culture' and the sociable, supportive community it can build.Read more
After college, Tom moved to London and started working at highly regarded members only club, The Club at The Ivy. It was at The Ivy that Tom’s passion for wine really began. He started taking his WSET qualifications there of which he now holds a Diploma qualification. As his knowledge of wine grew, Tom was increasingly called upon to talk wine with guests and at Christmas would advise on wine choices in Annabel's Cellars under Berkeley Square. Wine had got him, he was hooked!
In 2014, Tom left the restaurant side of the industry to follow his passion for wine full-time. Tom joined Ridgeview in Sussex; producers of some of the finest English sparkling wine and true pioneers of quality winemaking in England and he is now Ridgeview’s Sales & Business Development Director.
Tom is one of the Three Wine Men, joining the original line-up of Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin on Three Wine Men, at the UK’s leading wine events. The group tour throughout Britain, putting on hugely popular, large-scale, public wine tastings. Since 2017, Tom had hosted masterclasses at the events as well as joining the boys to bounce around the main room talking to guests and introducing them to wines. In 2018, Tom was invited to join the official line-up as the new kid on the block. Due to the success of this, Tom returns in 2019 alongside the original trio.
Tom continues to host masterclasses at some events, these can be on any subject but common themes include sparkling wine and cheese and wine matching.
Tom is a regular wine expert on BBC Sussex & Surrey Radio with a monthly slot. Throughout 2019 he will be on the radio at 2pm every third Tuesday of the month talking wine.
